It is often used to protect a video projector, LCD TV, Plasma TV, and many other remote devices separated from the main system.

The MIW-SURGE is intended to protect a remote device and is used where you cannot run electric wire between an outlet connected to a surge protector, and, the outlet near the remote device. So, this product is an alternative to the MIW-POWER-PRO-PFP, but only provides for one signal line module. The MIW-SURGE typically replaces an existing wall outlet. The warranty works much differently though. Unlike the MIW-POWERKIT-PRO and the MIW-XT products, for a warranty to apply to the MIW-SURGE, you must also purchase the appropriate MIW signal modules (there is room for only one of them). This is required due to surges being able to come in via the signal line cables, even if they are protected on the other end via a surge protector.
There are two ways to use this product. Method 1 is where you only want to protect your plasma tv or other device, there is no other system you want protected or is not already protected. In this case, buy 1 MIW-SURGE, and, MIW signal line module to accommodate ALL interconnect cables coming into your device. The second scenario is where you already have one surge protector on your main system, and, a remote display or other device to be protected. In this case, the best solution is to use the MIW-POWERKIT-PRO or the MIW-XT (you get the benefits of the main protector when using this method, and, interconnect protection via the signal line modules is not required though it does look better). If you cannot run new electric wire between the locations, then, you MUST buy two of everything mentioned in method 1. You put one by the display or remote device, and the other by the surge protector system. This is required for a warranty, there is no scenario where it is not. You can gain some measure of protection without using the modules, you just will forfeit your connected equipment warranty.
The MIW-SURGE comes with a flat connect AC power cord to allow placement very close to the wall, this will fit behind a wall mounted TV for example (<1"). It also comes with three inserts: a pass-through insert, a decora trim plate adapter, and a keystone insert.
