The Panamax Max1500-UPS (M1500-UPS) is a high performance uninterruptible power supply designed for the home theater. With a 1500VA rating, learning IR output controlling critical load management, RS232 management, and, superior noise filtration, the Max 1500-UPS is the ideal solution for managing power in a home theater environment.
Why would you want a Panamax M1500-UPS over any other UPS? Heck, why do you even want one? There are a variety of very good reasons actually. Some audio video equipment has volatile memory that is lost during a power failure. DVR type devices (or VCR of course) can be kept recording during a power outage. DLP and RPTV such as LCD need to cool their bulbs properly before power loss in order to prevent heat damage. Other UPS type devices are really designed with a computer in mind, they do not provide home theater functionality. Most are not pure sine wave output, this unit is a pure sine wave line interactive UPS. They actually introduce noise and have no home automation integration. Most of them output a lot of audible noise via an always running cooling fan. Finally, they lack the aesthetics.
Would I want a UPS AND a Surge protector? Absolutely! The Panamax Max1500-UPS is designed for use as a backup power supply. It does have some noise filtration (level 4), but, it is not of the same level as the nicer component series of protectors from Panamax. There is a limited number of outlets, and, you do not want to consume the battery with high power devices like a amplifier, the UPS would limit it's output and have very little run time if you did. It does not protect all signal paths commonly encountered, the protection is not on par with the surge protectors (and you'll note there is no guarantee that it will protect you). The best way to hook up this product is to plug it into an existing Panamax surge protector, an always on outlet.
The front of the M1500-UPS has an on/off button, a test button to test the battery, indicators for battery level, battery mode, AVR indicator, unsafe voltage indicator, line fault, load level, and, power on. There is also a removable access panel so you can get at the battery.
On the back of the Panamax M1500-UPS is 4 non-critical load outlets. These outlets a surge protected and also have voltage regulation. There are also 2 critical load outlets that also have AVR and surge protection. The Max1500-UPS can be set to turn off the non-critical outlets at some level of remaining battery capacity and allow the critical load outlets to keep functioning with the remaining power. Also on the back is the IR switches for learning and testing, 2 mini jacks (1/8 inch or 3.5mm) for IR output via flashers which are NOT included, output delay switches to set the delay before IR is output in the case of a failure (30 seconds, or, 5 minutes), several circuit breakers, an RS232 communication port for links to a home automation system, and, a RJ11/RJ45 port for network or phone line protection. The unit can be rack mounted, and, includes a kit to do so.
The RS232 port is used for system setting changes (software included), and for integration with Crestron and AMX. The output of the M1500-UPS is a pure sine wave, the best possible power.
Here's how it works. The power goes off. Battery backup kicks in. After some preset delay, IR commands are output via flashers to shut down up to 2 components. This needs to be a DISCRETE off signal. You would use this for example to shut off a projector or LCD style TV. Power to the non critical outlets is shut off first at some predetermined battery level. Finally, battery power is shut off as the battery is out of capacity. |
